Infertility is the biological inability of a man or woman to contribute towards conception. Woman who are not able to carry their pregnancy successfully for the complete duration are also medically referred to as infertile. Often the couples having problems with infertility think that they are the only one, but it is not so. Infertility is much more common than we think it is. One out of every ten couple is suffering from infertility of some sorts.
Medical practitioners have set parameters and time periods to check fertility or infertility of any couple (inability to conceive with reference to time). Medical practitioners use the term subfertility in many cases for those couples who have tried unsuccessfully to have a child for more than a year. Many of the causes of subfertility is however same as infertility which could be endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome.
Medical practitioners also further classify infertility into primary and secondary infertility. In primary infertility the couples have never been able to consummate. Whereas in secondary infertility, conceiving is difficult after been already conceiving once or more before and successfully carrying out a pregnancy.
Infertility is caused by lack of ovulation, blockage of fallopian tube, hormonal imbalance, and weak fetus, inability to form a good embryo and improper menstrual cycle?s etcetera in women. In men it is usually caused due to low count of sperm, low mobility of the same and due to disfigured shape of sperm cell. There are however other causes too. Obesity and high cholesterol levels effect infertility too.
In recent times with progress of science the disease infertility has lost its invincibility and notoriety as there are modern methods and techniques which give us an alternative and remedy to our biological disability. Proper treatments and tests can be done to find out the problem. However in a number of cases the cause of infertility remains unexplained and undiagnosed.
But most of the infertility treatments involve high cost which is beyond the reach of most. Hence the techniques and treatment still remain at a far distance from an ordinary man. The ordinary man still does not have any answer to the problem of infertility.
For this reason people are also moving towards alternate medicine, which includes homeopathy and herbal medicines, to find cure of infertility. The alternate medicines in some cases are found to be very useful to treat infertility.
Infertility has profound psychological impact. Here the partner becomes overtly anxious to conceives, ironically increasing the sexual dysfunction. Women face immense trauma on her inability to conceive.
In some societies it is considered degrading of a man if he can?t produce and he is looked down upon. Thence such a man faces immense psychological trauma and social pressure due to infertility. Till the time the treatment of infertility does not reaches the common man, it?s hardly of any use, as the majority of the people suffering from infertility still remain away from its cure.
