Before contemplating on the actual topic we must understand what actually infertility in men means.
It means being incapable of or unsuccessful in achieving pregnancy over a long time period (as a year) even after serious efforts has been made out by couples without the use of contraceptives. During this ultra fast age where everything is just a mouse click away, it has been observed that there has been growing number of cases of infertility in men.
Now let?s ponder on the occurrence of this medical incapability in men.
Infertility in men can be because of various factors. The most common among it is
(a) azoospermia i.e. no sperm cells are produced
(b) oligospermia i.e. few sperm cells are produced
Some of the general causes which affect the sperm production in males are
? Strenuous riding e.g. Bicycle riding, Horseback riding
? Drugs, alcohol, smoking
? Hypogonadism due to various causes
On occasions, sperm cells die before it reaches the egg. In very few cases infertility has also been observed because of genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis or chromosomal abnormality. For a man to be fertile it is important that he delivers a sufficient amount of sperm to a woman?s vagina where egg can be fertilized. Various causes have been sought out which cause infertility in men.
If the temperature where sperms are produced increases then this can significantly lower the quantity and the quality of the sperm produced. Constant heat exposure, occurrence of prolonged fevers etc helps in reducing the sperms. In many cases it has been observed that hormonal disorders like hyperprolactinemia, hypothyroids, disorder in pituitary gland or adrenal gland has led to infertility in men. Many a times genetic disorders like abnormality of the sex chromosomes have also led to infertility in men.
It has also been found out that mumps also leads to reduction in sperm production and therefore infertility in men. Other causes like environmental toxins, drugs, injury to the testes also cause infertility in men.
Drugs like aspirin, androgens, cyclophosphamide,chlorambucil if taken for long duration of time then it might lead to infertility in men. Anabolic steroids intervene with production of sperms by affecting the levels of hormones. Those men who consume alcohol in excess may have to face with infertility problem.
Azoospermia or the complete absence of sperm is caused because of disorders like missing seminal vesicles, blockage in the ejaculatory ducts or many a times because of missing vasa deferentia. Many men also face a typical disorder called retrograde ejaculation where the sperm moves in a different direction from its desired path. This occurrence is generally observed in men who have prolonged diabetes or who have undergone surgery in their pelvic.
Excessive use of lubricants, timing and frequency of intercourse, use of recreational drugs, exposure to hazardous radiation, use of steroids etc can cause infertility in men.
